Black Rock City, NV  The New Ephemeral Architecture of Burning Man

5 years in the making with foreword by Zahid Sardar and essays by Burning Man co-founder Harley K. Dubois, Fred Bernstein architecture critic and AIASF architect Glenn Lym,
this 144 pages hardcover book with a bright orange cloth bookmark
is the sequel of the now sold out
first book covering the early years of Black Rock.

With 200 new images taken from 2011 to 2015, the book explores the camps and the villages shaping the city while
offering a broad vision of the multiples solutions
to camp in style or not in the 21st century.

THE 2016 GOLDEN REBAR AWARDS

Disclaimer for the 12 readers and counting of this blog: given the ever-changing weather pattern combined to the ebb and flow of participants, it is impossible to see the entirety of shelters and dwellings, visit all the camps and villages that dot the city. I spared no effort to explore all the streets back and forth from 2:00 to 10:00, A to L, for two weeks documenting this
urban phenomenon.

If you have any precision to add, calmly contact me: brc(at)philippeglade.com

The Soundscape Golden Rebar

In 2016, indisputably, The Mayan Warrior mutant vehicle could not be missed thanks to a lasers display that rivals any stadium bands, a beyond believes 70,000 watt sound system to dance to talented and daring DJ's like Jennifer Cardini among an impressive list of artists.
Its sound signature brings the promises of tension and rhythm.
The Man's burn and post-burn sets were just phenomenal.

Golden Rebar for Design

The Origami Pod designed by Joerg Student
and made of 1 sheet of folded corrugated
polypropylene with bamboo sticks, works
like a charm for several years on the playa.

It was the camp of The Shrumen Lumen installation

The intricate oculus of the origami pod

Structural Golden Rebar

Marshal, camp designer of Wrongtown wanted a beacon
to help fellow campers find their way home at night.
The mast equipped with programmable LED's
has "branches" that with wires support a 60' diameter octagonal canopy.

This simple and elegant solution is quite easy to put in place.

Detail of the branches

Tiny House Golden Rebar

Several years ago, Thomas Kwaske, a contractor by trade,
built a three story Pagoda, featured in one of the first entries of this blog.
Helped by his wife, it took him two days to build
the plywood panels Love Shack II, with a bed, a kitchen sink
and lighting provided by photovoltaic panels on the roof.

On the wall the power inverter surrounded by a hat collection

Did I mentioned the private dry toilet?

Cute as a Cube Golden Rebar

Defying the laws of aerodynamics and cuteness,
this camp held strong and did not budge during the few dust storms cheering up life in the burb.
Built in a couple of hours by Paige and Adrian.

The frame is made of 2x4's and 4x4's connected by nuts and bolts
for a fast set up and strike.

Golden Rebar for the Zendo

A place for psychedelic harm reduction, the Zendo is a safe place for anyone having a challenging experience and a landmark for many years.
Designed by Paul Discoe, the Zendo is made of
5000 pounds of recycled cardboard.
The circular chamber with its large oculus welcomes 30 people at a time.

Feeling safe and protected inside the Zendo

The "I cannot believe it" Golden Rebar

The Tower of Slackjaw a.k.a The Sputnik, a well known landmark at 3:00@K,  is single-handedly built in one week by Stephen Nicholas.
Kuddos!!

Three geodesic domes on top of each other. Only at Black Rock!

Golden Rebar for Upcycling

Camp Monkey Love, a sound camp, repurposed several shipping containers in chilling lounges.
The sides open up to serve as a sturdy dance floor while
 the centre offers decent shade.
These containers are the building blocks of a reusable
and scalable shade structure.

to get to the Foam experience.

The foam experience was one of the best surprise I had on the playa.
After a week in the desert I felt rejuvenated and delighted to meet such a purposefully organised camp with outstanding participants.

Golden Rebar for New Shelter

Designed by Sean Taylor, "The Gitana" with its hinged plywood panels
flat packs in a 6" stack.
An easily assembled metal frame supports the roof made of two layers of canvas that with the help of an A/C system keeps the shelter cool.
40 of them were installed in few days by a strong crew at Camp Gitane
(see a the bottom of the page)

Inside a Gitana

The New Tent Golden Rebar

These pyramidal structures were part of The Mayan Warrior (this year buzz word) camp.
This picture doesn't do justice to the engineering involved in the design of these easy to set up tipi-like tents: folding carbon fiber poles with a water proof and breathable fabric.
Called Buffalo Tent, two models are available, at a price.
Because it's a week-long event, we prefer the XL model with an standing hight entrance.

Clam Six Pack tent, normally a shelter for ice fishing, it does not have a ground tarp and reflective fabric, offers a less expensive option to the desert tailored Shiftpod.

The Siesta4 by Outback Logic is a new tent created by festivalgoers who wanted to create a tent where it would possible to sleep in all day long even under the heat of the desert.
The creators developed their own reflective fabric and added fans to make the tent extra cool.
They were successful in their Indiegogo campaign as it was visible by the sheer number of these tents on the playa.
We just wish that one day they will do standing height models.

I'm surprised 'American Dream Camp' which spent time decorating a trailer beat out 'Camp Suburbia' which built an entire neighborhood with homes and garages. Check them out, think you guys would like their stuff www.facebook.com/campsuburbia

Hello Camp Suburbia nice to hear from you. Last year, 2015, you won a Golden Rebar for Theme camp. This year, when I was in your neighbourhood you were still setting up.

Usually I don't like to give a Golden Rebar (they are so expensive) to the same camp/person/shelter that already got one in the past. Of course there are some exceptions: This year design GG for the Origami pod that years ago I featured in this blog. This time I had the opportunity to talk with the designer and understood the intimacy of its design. As of The American Dream Camp, it is a nod to people who spend a bit of time to decorate their ugly trailer. When it is made with humour and a wink it brings flair to the neighbourhood, we like that. Plus it gave me the opportunity to put a link to one the best guitar solo ever.

Lastly, this should put a smile on your face, Camp Suburbia is featured on ONE PAGE at the start of my book, see the multiple links sprinkled all along this blog, in the essay written by Harley K. Dubois one of the founder of of BM.

Hi.
nice pictures.
My good friend and longtime neighbor Natasha from BRC turned me onto your site. Our other friends n neighbors jake and bootsie at burning dog told her, and she told me.
My name is Bryan. I built the camp you gave the golden rebar to for keeping it real.
I call it camp crooked. Forgot my level..
Credit for the design and style i is due to my other longtime friend and neighbor In Hawaii and at bm, Eddie Petri.
A master carpenter and artist that turned me on to bm and bicycles many years ago. What a great combo.
The shade structure you photoed was a modified version of his design.
Google honololo bikes. You'll get a small taste of some of the things he does.

Thanks for the recognition. I build the camp as a refuge for friends and family that need a quite space to regroup.
I make a killer cup of coffe in the morning. Stop by sometime. I'll serve you up.
